Help me choose.

Ok, so it's a real slow day and I was just all over ESPN.com. Apparently, since he enjoyed the World Cup so much, The Sports Guy (TSG) has decided to become a soccer fan (as if it's a decision) and wants to have a Premiership team to call his very own.

There's pages on this, where he lists some of the emails he received in favor of certain teams, where he ranks the teams and finally chooses his new team: the Spurs.

Here's the thing, I'm no newbie to soccer of the EPL, but I too have no specific team to root for. I watch FSC all the time, but I'm not rooting for any one team, I'm just watching some good footie.

But I wonder if it's time for me to pick sides?

TSG has all kinds of criteria and his lackeys all mailed in emails comparing their various teams to the Celtics and the Red Sox in order to get him to like them.

I have no specific criteria, other than I'm not picking Man U, on principle. I like Liverpool because Steven Gerrard is an absolute beast and I dig the loyalty aspect. I like Arsenal for the Green Bay Packers-esque fans-own-the team thing they've got going. And, you know, Thierry Henry doesn't suck either. Since TSG picked them, you'll really have to convince me to pick the Spurs.

I don't buy the bandwagon argument, because frankly it can be made for any team. When your choices are basically 6, it's hard to find one that isn't an "easy pick". I'm undecided on this English vs. non-English player debate. It seems you have to be one side or the other, and yet I can't see why it's so bad for a team to not have tons of English-born players. What that should show is that this is the top league and it draws the top talent.

I like Steven Gerrard, but I kind of hate Peter Crouch. I love saying Fabregas' name. Micheal Owen is rather pretty.

As we can see, there's no clear cut frontrunner here.

The final consideration is that I'm seeing Chelsea next weekend at the MLS All-Star game.

So at the risk of being a SG clone, I wonder what your opinions are. What team should I choose?

Hey Nicole that article inspired me a little bit, but since I don't do the cable or satellite thing(I know, I Know) I didn't know how to follow them. Let us know who you decide and why, and I might just become a fan for the hell of it. I thought this was going to be a slow posting week?

You can read about what I did to select teams to follow at my blog if you like. I did the same thing you are doing last week only I'm doing it for one team in the Bundesliga, EPL, La Liga, and Serie A.

MC, I thought so too, but the internet's up at this temp job and everyone's been in a meeting most of the day, so I've got A LOT of free time.

Basically, whether or not I'd have the internet was the deciding factor. I knew that if we didn't that I would not go home and post a bunch.

Attic: I wonder how many blogs are following TSG. Your undertaking is immense and I admire that. I could see myself doing that, but I think I'll start small and committ myself to this first.

It's weird that I'm not more hardcore about pro soccer, in any form, as I have played for 20 years. It's like the one pro sport I can claim no affiliations in, which just isn't cool. I figure I'll pick my team and really get into following via the Internet and FSC, then I'll try to branch out, probably to La Liga next, as I'm a spanish speaker.

yeah, i'm a little afraid that i might have bitten off more than i can chew. oh well, it will be fun anyway.

and, i'm in the same boat. played soccer all my life, watch as much as i can on tv, yet no real favorite team.

TSG's summary of some of the teams on his list is so off that I gave up on him entirely. NOT EVERY FREAKING OLD ENGLISH STADIUM IS LIKE FENWAY! I'll run down his mistakes and give you some of the more off-color choices later, when I have more time to pick apart TSG (now that's biting off more than you can chew).

Chelsea and Arsenal Nooooooooooooooo!

Got that off my chest.

I support manu ( i took the comments deeply personally...........only joking) so it's in my blood to hate arsenal and chelsea.

On the loyalty till you die and passion basis if you can't take Manu Liverpool is a good option. Just have to put your feelings towards dear old crouchie aside.

The whole foreign/english player thing? People who are against the foreign players are in my opinion hypocrites. How can they support a team that contains foreign stars and then turn around and say they don't want them? I do however think that there has to be more emphasis on developing players from youth level, instead of just buying in the current biggest star for a quick panacea/to get more sponsors/ tv coverage/all of the above. That is my other reason for hating chelsea.

Lastly, as with any sport, pick who you want, not who you are told to support. I've supported MANU for 11 years, most of the time in the face of being that i shouldn't because i am a softie southerner, whose never been to a game ( i live a long way away) and because apparently i jumped on the bandwagon. I did not as i first heard of them properly and starting supporting them in the the 95 fa cup final which they LOST. And I will support them till the day i die.

Pippa

Let us know what the chelsea game is like and who plays.

Just posted this comment on tn irish's blog and thought others might like 2 c it, if they have to follow the english premier league online :

I think that the BBC website is probably the best, they have indepth coverage of each team, videos and well their sport section is excellent anyway. To listen to live matches on the internet go to www.bbc.co.uk/fivelive/ and check out their schedules, all you need is realplayer to do this.If you want opinion english newspapers such as www.timesonline.co.uk,www.guardianunlimited.co.uk, www.telegraph.co.uk. www.thesun.co.uk,www.mirror.co.uk would all be good, and would provide a good range. Hope this helps. Pippa

I'm thinking about rooting for either Blackburn, Everton, or New Castle United. I have been trying to supplement the SG info with other research, but none of the teams have just jumped out at me.

Nicole said...

None are bad choices, but you do have the possibility of relegation (though it's barely looming on the horizon)

Also, you'll only get to see their games if they're playing one of the biggies that week.

Just a thought...

TNIRISHFAN said...

Yeah back to my other comment. I will only get to see them play if I do something online since I don't have cable or satellite(I know I Know). I am leaning heavily toward Everton at this point.

Nicole said...

I don't know why, but I really love "Blackburn Rovers" Seriously, I just like the way it sounds. There's absolutely no basis for it...

If you go with them you might be able to sway me. I am still wishy washy on it.

Blackburn is a great choice. They get extra love from me for being one of the original clubs of the FA, along with Aston Villa, Everton, and Bolton Wanderers. (Wolverhampton and Preston North End also gets love, as does Notts County, the oldest football club in the world and the inspiration for the Juventus shirts.)

Anyways, back to what I was saying about uh... Bill Simmons' article, it's stupid. Arsenal is NOT the Red Sox, sure Arsenal finished 2nd in '99, '00, '01 and '03, what he failed to mention, of course is that they won in '98 and '02. So calling '04 a "break through" is stupid and ill informed of him (no surprise).

And damn it, Arsenal is NOT owned by the fans. Danny Fiszman owns 25% of Arsenal, Nina Bracewell-Smith owns another 16%, David Dein owns 15% and Peter Hill-Wood owns about 1%, Granada Ventures owns 10%, Lansdowne Partners owns 3% (do the math, that's well over 70% of the club belonging to those 6 entities.) Most of the rest is taken up by minor stockholders because Arsenal is a PLC traded on the PLUS Market, a specialties market. The "reason" why some people are claiming, dubiously, that Arsenal is "owned by the fans" is that in order to build their new state of the art stadium, Arsenal had to borrow heavily hedging on future ticket sales (50 years into the future to be exact) and also sold some bonds to supporters.

White Hart Lane and Highbury are NOT like Fenway Park, and neither is old Anfield. If anything, Anfield is much MUCH more like Yankee Stadium, where the Kop and the bleacher bums compare much better (Green Monster my foot).

Jose Mourinho is NOT like Bill Belichick. Bill Belichick is also the GM of the Pats and has a salary cap, no such thing at Chelsea. And the Yankees compare with Chelsea at this point much better than Manchester United. Manchester United is like the Braves. A fairly rich team with a nice base that rode its youth system to glory and more riches began spending in the hopes of trying to maintain that level of success. If you were thinking and picking this 10, 15 years ago, Manchester United would have been the runaway choice here. Because at that point, Manchester United had everything a new fan would love: youth, loyal fan base, history, tradition, underdog status (not won the top divison since 1967), tragedy (Munich), everything. The Bill Belichick/Vince Lombardi comparison works MUCH better with Sir Alex Ferguson (or maybe Bill Parcells).

God I hate people like him who don't know anything and spouts off like they do. Can someone slap some sense into him and tell him never to write about or reference anything beyond what he knows: Boston sports, basketball, and late 80s TV? Thanks.

Oh yeah, choices.

In England, I support Crystal Palace, for the awesome name (especially translated to Chinese). Following football down in 2nd tier of EPL isn't bad. You don't get front page coverage (or headlines), but you get the highlights on SkySports and the odd games on FSC here and there. Once you open yourself up for the Coca-Cola Championship, a much better choice of teams comes in. It's not as bad as you'd think (but then again, you don't need convincing, being a Brewers fan and all).

Spain I go for Real Madrid, I started following them before their recent run of success (back in the days when they hadn't won a CL for 30+ years). But if you are starting out and want to be different, I recommend Sevilla, Real Mallorca, or Osasuna. Sevilla is known for cranking out amazing talents (and they are REALLY supportor owned), Real Mallorca is located in Mallorca, what other reason do you need? And Osasuna is an up and coming squad based in Pamplona.

In Germany I follow Frankfurt. Wonderful stadium, some history, not much bandwagon. But Hertha Berlin, Brussia Dortmund, HSV, Werder Bremen (hideous kits aside), Schalke are all nice choices besides the obvious FC Bayern.

I've stopped following Serie A in Italy because of the scandal-ruling-reversal. But if you want to be different, follow clubs like Fiorentina (scandals aside), Parma, or Udinesse.

In France, Lyon is an obvious choice, but Lille, PSG, Reims, Nice, and Monaco are all pretty nice too.

Those are my recommendations. Just don't pick teams based on whatever stupid things Bill Simmons posted.

Moin, I had no intention of taking anything TSG said into consideration. I mean, the man's picking the team based on vacationability. Let's apply that theory to Green Bay - who the hell wants to visit there. Wisconsinites don't even want to go there. But look at what a team you'd miss out on. Dum, dum reasoning.

I'm already an FC Bayern fan, but that's because my soccer club is Bavarian. You can't overule that much ingrained love, no matter how bandwagonny it seems.

Finally, I have a confession. I just don't see this specific affiliation thing taking off, for many, many reasons, the foremost is that I'm rather lazy about looking up sporting information online. I'm absolutely spoiled and I want to know what happened without having to search for it. Stupid, I know, but I'm trying to be realistic.

But I'm going to try. Mostly I'm setting everybody up for the inevitable disappointment that will happen by the 2nd month when I'm back to watching whatever matches I run into.
