I hope you noticed the amusing poetic justice in the game last night, I'm not certain if I'm the only one who caught on to it, but there it was. Baseball sometimes bookends a story fairly well.
In the sixth after Sabathia gave up the double which scored the two earned runs on the night for Colorado, Spillbourghs pulled up lame at third base. He clearly would have scored, but something with his hip or a cramp caused him to stop at the station in lieu of a pinch runner. That runner? Scott Podsednik. Why would anyone care about that? I'll tell you why.
Podsednik was the first major (at that time, a very minor) acquisition of the Melvin era, claiming the underperforming speedy outfielder from the Mariners. Eventually Melvin turned him into Carlos Lee then Francisco Cordero then to the two supplementary picks in this year's draft, all the while building and improving the team. Then he was thrown out by Sabathia to complete a double play, the reigning Cy Young winner from the American league and most recent acquisition that came full circle at that very moment, effectively closing the book on the rebuilding process that started with the Podsednik signing.
