I wanna be, I wanna be like Todd...

Ok, so I have no insane ideas to try and watch anywhere near as many movies as Todd has, but every once in a while I get the whim that I want to watch all the movies on the American Film Insitute's "100" lists.

A few years ago the AFI began producing these lists in conjunction with the centennial anniversary of the birth of Cinema.

There's the 100 year, 100 movies list

100 years, 100 passions

100 years, 100 laughs

100 years, 100 thrills

100 years, 100 chills

There are some other lists as well - and all they can all be found here.

So I've been saying I'm going to do this, then I print out the list, see how few of the truly great movies that I've seen, become dismayed and embarrassed ... and usually forget about the whole thing.

So here's the complete "top 100" list and the ones I've seen (meager though my list is) are bolded:

Ok, so admittedly, it's pathetic the number of movies I haven't seen. But I could have told you that without the aid of this list.

I've never seen a Bond movie. I've never seen a full Indiana Jones movie. I've not seen the Godfathers. I've never seen a Hitchcock movie.

I know it's bad, so I'm using this list as an impetus to see how far I get. No time limit - just a guide to get my butt in gear.

You haven't seen The Searchers, or The Wild Bunch, or The Godfather, or Raiders of the Lost Ark, or Jaws, good God the further I go through your list the less I can believe the movies you haven't seen. Sheesh.

I know. Pathetic, isn't it?

My first date with the woman that became my wife was going to Apocalypse Now. Pretty intense.
Wow, lots of good ones. Probably still my favorite is One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
The Best Years of Our Lives is just an incredible movie because of when it was made, 1946, when all the war movies were gooey patriotic, "Best Years"... well, there's a reason it's on the list.
At least you've seen the 1930 version of "All Quiet" another incredible movie considering when it was made.
"The Longest Day" belongs on this list as the greatest war movie ever made just in terms of stars, the story it told at the time it was made.
Not many comedies, eh?

No, not so much on the comedies. They do have a 100 laughs list, so I wonder if comedies were left off with the thought that they were making another list, or if it's just that comedies rarely get recognized as cinematic genius...
