According to ESPN's Jason Whitlock, Brett Favre doesn't want to retire. He wants to be traded to a team that might actually accomplish something.

Most profound thing Whitlock says: "Thompson torpedoed any thoughts of things getting better quickly when he tagged the Doogie Howser architect of the league's worst offense -- San Francisco's Mike McCarthy -- to fix Green Bay's mess."
Which, I might add, is what I've been saying all along whenver people fight with me. There were like 3 teams that sucked more than we did last year. And we interviewed coaches from each of those teams. Brilliant strategy!
